London Wonderland or Alice In Wonderland?

The first time I saw these pictures of London, I was immediately transported back to my childhood and the first time I watched Disney’s adaptation of author, Lewis Carroll’s surreal tale of Alice In Wonderland.

These new works by photographer Nicholas ‘Nico’ Goodden, titled London Wonderland, immediately reminded me of a quote from the surreal tale, made famous by the Cheshire Cat, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there.”

I can’t help but feel that Goodden may have had to embrace this notion before being able to reach the stage to really make these images of London as wonder-full as they actually are.

By literally depicting the Gherkin as a gherkin, entwining the chimneys of Battersea Power Station with a ball of wool, and imagining a ride down the Hackney Wick canal in a tea cup, Goodden along with his sister, a US based illustrator have managed to combine, what to me is an overly familiar cityscape, and a fond memory of a childhood favourite reminding me to always look twice, as nothing is ever as it may originally seem.
